What, if any, is the proper way of adding custom fonts to the Typography admin section?

So that I can hopefully fully answer your question, could you please provide more information.

Are you wanting to add a custom font so that it is selectable in the Typography section of the customizer?
If so, is it a Google font that is not currently in the available options?
Or is it a font that you have the files of, and want to add it in the mix with the Google fonts options?

Or do you want to override the theme fonts with your own font?

Do you have the files (.ttf .woff. eot etc..) for the font you wish to use?

Yes, wishing to add additional font(s) to the Typography section in customizer.  It’s not a google font, it’s one that I have the files for.  Would just like it to be another font option along with the others.

In that case it would be need quite a lot of custom work and testing.

If you simply wanted to load the font in a custom stylesheet and apply the font to a specific element of your content, that would be quite simple to achieve.

That’s what I was afraid the answer was going to be.  The good news is, the time I spent trying to figure out how to make it happen wasn’t because I was a complete idiot.  Thanks for the information.
